Pragmatic Issues ofIdiomatic Expressions Interpreting

Wewill now take a close look at some aspects ofidiomatic expressions. An important point which has to be stressed is that phrasal verbs are not only colloquial phrases, as plenty of people think. They may be found in formal style and in colloquial speech. They may be found in poetry or in the masterpieces of Dickens and business letters.

What, then, is an idiom? One may say that an idiom is some number of words which, taken in the same place, mean something special from the separate phrases of the idiom when they are placed individually. Other idioms are completely ordinary and reasonable in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. Due to the peculiar properties of some idioms, we shall study the idiomatic expressions in general and we sometimes cannot change any part of it (except perhaps, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English is very rich in idioms. In fact, it is difficult to speak or write English without using idioms. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; perhaps he does not even realize that an idiom which he implements is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him trouble. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It is impossible to be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes understood from the vocabulary.
